Abstract:
Where the kernel is headed and what can we expect? Linux 3.0 could very well have been Linux 2.6.40 as per Linus Torvalds. The reason being, the difference between 2.6.39 and 3.0 isn't a complete architecture overhaul to warrant a major version number bump -- the version number was upped was just for "convenience". However, the fast-paced development model of the kernel make things seem like a major version bump nonetheless when you switch from an old Enterprise Linux distribution to its current version. Since most enterprise-grade OS are stuck to either 2.6.32 or older kernels, let us walk through what has come in during the last one year or so, just so we're ready for new things introduced -- as well as old things that are to be, or will be, deprecated -- next time there is a bump in the Enterprise Linux OS kernel version.
